“Eloquent prose and haunting characters lift Oppegaard's astonishing debut..." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Oppegaard demonstrates a terrific sense of the macabre with absorbing sequences featuring feral children, a house papered in suicide notes, and other relics of a dying society. He also articulately ponders why such a plague might materialize." -Kirkus Reviews

"Just when it seems that there are no new plots left to write about, David Oppegaard has come up with a doozy. His “The Suicide Collectors” takes us to a startling theme we haven’t encountered before, with every page a thrilling new surprise." -Stan Lee, writer, editor, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics

“David Oppegaard’s THE SUICIDE COLLECTORS is a wonderfully creepy debut novel filled with unnerving twists and turns! Unsettling, bleak and dangerous.” -Jonathan Maberry, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of PATIENT ZERO

"Oppegaard's big bad is an abstraction, but it engenders very concrete terrors. I was reminded of Junji Ito's Uzumaki, which in my book is as good as it gets. " - Mike Carey, author of THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, and bestselling and award-winning author of Vertigo Comics's LUCIFER and HELLBLAZER:

In one of the most stunning debuts to come along in years, David Oppegaard gives us a world whose near future presents some terrifying realities.

In THE SUICIDE COLLECTORS, an inexplicable plague of ennui known as “The Despair” has enveloped the world for five years, and nearly ninety percent of the population has committed suicide, and the few survivors struggle to remain alive.

A mysterious, shadowy group called the Collectors has emerged, inevitably appearing to remove the bodies of the dead. But in the crumbling state of Florida, a man named Norman takes an unprecedented stand against the Collectors, propelling him on a journey across North America toward a scientist in Seattle who is rumored to be working on a cure for the Despair.

Oppegaard brings an intriguing new perspective to the concept of apocalypse. “There are dozens of man-made possibilities for the end of the world,” he explains, “but I was intrigued by the idea of humanity simply giving up and dying out.”

With harrowing twists and turns, THE SUICIDE COLLECTORS is sure to appeal to fans of dystopian future novels like Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and the works of John Twelve Hawkes and William Gibson.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: David Oppegaard was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He holds a B.A. in English Literature from St. Olaf College and an M.F.A. in Writing from Hamline University. This is his first novel.

Fictionwritersgroup.com is a writing resource which was created specifically with writers in mind. It was designed to be a place where established Authors can come to try out new or off market ideas with anonymity and see by our signature Quick Click Rating System how readers respond to their works.

But we are more than just that. With our continuously expanding network of Proofreaders, Publishers and Agents, we are also an excellent place for novice or amateur writers to grow into the field. In our experience the two primary factors that limit the success of most new or aspiring Authors is one - the amount of time they actually spend writing, and two – the lack of confidence they have in their own innate abilities as writers.

Our site addresses both of these issues by inspiring our members to work on weak areas with our review system and by motivating them to become more prolific through our challenges and friendly competitions and the camaraderie they develop with others in the same situation.

We at Fictionwritersgroup.com believe that the only way to become a better writer is to write more, and the best way to write more is to begin writing right now.

Pre-orders for The Monster Within Idea by R. Thomas Riley

One of our early 2009 titles, The Monster Within Idea, is a collection that contains nineteen stories from the dark mind of horror writer R. Thomas Riley.

Riley's work has been compared to horror legends Richard Laymon and Dean Koontz. In our experiences, it is the way Riley instills a deep sense of humanity into his characters that makes his style of writing horror so empathetic and powerful. Those of you who have read the Apex anthology Gratia Placenti will be familiar with this very writing trait in the story "Only Spirits Cry" (also included in The Monster Within Idea).

"The Convent of the Pure is a compelling blend of the numinous and the creepy, with a rich, atmospheric setting. I devoured it in a single sitting!"
– Jacqueline Carey (Kushiel's Dart)

Paul Jessup - OPEN YOUR EYES
Her lover was a supernova who took worlds with him when he died, and as a new world grows within Ekhi, savage lives rage and love on a small ship in the outer reaches of space. A ship with an agenda of its own.

Open Your Eyes is a space opera described by Jay Lake (Escapement, Green) as "echoing the fantastic imagery of Samuel R. Delany and the angst-ridden identity paranoia of
Philip K. Dick."

Press Release: The Battering of Burstein

The Battering of Burstein

Apex Publications Ramps up the Raffle to Replace Stolen and Damaged Books

November 16, 2008 - Yesterday, Apex Book Company received a shipment of hardcover copies of Michael A. Burstein's new collection "I Remember the Future." At least, the box was supposed to contain the book. What we actually received was a box full of...nothing. A second box contained 16 copies of the book, but they were damaged and unfit for sale. In total, the damaged and missing copies amount to 1/3 of the shipment. The boxes containing the other 2/3 of the shipment have not yet arrived, and we are not optimistic about their location or condition.

Since the Annual Apex Raffle is currently in progress, we are extending the raffle in order to raise additional funds for the replacement cost of the books. Originally scheduled to end on November 30, the raffle will now run through December 15, with the priority allotment of funds going to replace the damaged and missing books.

We understand that many of you reading this have already participated in the raffle, and we are grateful for your support. We ask that you assist us by passing the raffle link below along to anyone you think might be interested, or posting it on your blog or any forums you frequent that allow such items.

Here's the raffle link: http://www.apexbookcompany.com/cart.php?m=product_list&c=7
There are plenty of items for readers, writers, and collectors of all that is dark and good. And don't forget, 'tis almost the season, and nothing says "Happy Holidays" like a gift that will scare the socks off your friends and family.

Remember, 10% of all proceeds will be donated to Dolly's Imagination Library, a community program to foster a love of reading among children. Don't worry, we'll wait until they're older before we start making them read Apex books.

Apex Publications signs horror legend Gene O'Neill

Apex Books
A Division of Apex Publications
Contact: Jason Sizemore, Publisher
(859) 312-3974

"Man, something must be wrong with me, big time, he thought. Maybe the Puerto Rican had bruised more than his brain the night of the championship. Scarred something deep inside, hurt his ability to feel much of anything. " – from "Bruised Soul"

From Stoker Finalist Gene O'Neill - A Taste of Tenderloin

Apex Publications brings together eight tales of the dark side of San Francisco's 'Loin sector in this collection by horror legend Gene O'Neill. Several of the short stories included have appeared in prestigious magazines such as Cemetery Dance Magazine, Dark Wisdom, and the anthologies Unnatural Selection, Horror Beyond II, and The Grand Struggle. The tale "Balance" was a Stoker Award Finalist.

The 'Loin, Mr. O'Neill explains, is "a colorful section of [San Francisco], but rundown now like the famed Bowery used to be in NYC, hookers, pimps, junkies, all kinds of scam artists, but a certain kind of sleazy excitement in the foggy air at night […] Some of the characters in the various stories are composites of real people living in the 'loin back then. E.g.: There is a description in "The Apotheosis of Nathan McKee" of an aging junkie playing classical music on a corner for hat money, a tawdry angel trying to flap her broken wings and fly up out of the sleazy muck." The 'Loin will also be described by one-time resident and Mr. O'Neill's son, Gavin O'Neill, in the introduction to the collection.

Some of the tales included in this collection are "The Apotheosis of Nathan McKee," about a man who discovers a very special ability after receiving a vicious beating; "Bruised Soul," the story of an ex-boxer returning to the Tenderloin after a stay in a Sate Hospital, but still battling his own demons; and "Lost Patrol," which follows a wounded vet after his return to the 'loin after Vietnam, who is stalked by a supernatural presence. The collection also includes the original tale "Bushido." The book will be approximately 200 pages long.

E-books of Children of the Star novels

Posted on behalf of Sylvia Engdahl

The three novels of Children of the Star are now available as e-books for $5.95 each. Go to www.mobipocket.com and search for my name, or go to my home page www.sylviaengdahl.com and click on their book covers. The Mobipocket reader is free and works on many mobile devices as well on on PCs. (I really like it for reading on my desktop computer -- in fact I prefer to proofread in it rather than in a word processor, even though I have to go back to the word processing file to make corrections.)

I know I said these novels would never be issued separately again because I don't want readers to stop with the first one and think that I ignored certain scientific facts crucial to the motivation in the story merely for plot reasons, when in fact I wasn't aware of those facts back in the early 70s when I wrote the first two books. But I've decided that an Author's Note at the end of those books can make that clear without giving away the suspense of the third book. I found that many readers were hesitant to choose as long a book as the one-volume edition of the trilogy, and in any case, This Star Shall Abide can be enjoyed by younger readers than the others, which are rarely interesting to readers below high school age. Now that Meisha Merlin is no longer in business and the rights have reverted to me, I want to make the story available to as many new readers as possible.

I am planning to publish This Star Shall Abide (known in the UK as Heritage of the Star) -- but not the other two books -- in a print-on-demand trade paperback edition if there is any demand for it -- I know that some teachers used it in their classes before it became unobtainable as a separate book. If I do this, it will be available only at Amazon.com and from me; it will not be sold by distributors or in bookstores (for reasons having to do with the economics of book distribution). If you or anyone you know would be interested in buying it, please let me know now so that I can judge whether doing this is worthwhile. I will sell to schools and libraries (and bookstores if any want it) at 50% off.

There are still new copies of Children of the Star available, although it is officially out of print. The trade paperback can be obtained either from Amazon.com or from me. Also, there are now a few copies of the limited $50 hardcover edition available -- some turned up recently after a bookseller who had bought them went out of business. Fewer than 300 copies of the hardcover were printed, and there will be no more.

Also, I have signed copies available of both hardcover and paperback editions of The Far Side of Evil, which is out of print, and of Journey Between Worlds, which will not be in print much longer -- plus the hardcover edition of Enchantress from the Stars. I don't sell the paperback edition of Enchantress because it's still available from bookstores, as are both e-book and audio editions.

Don't forget that my adult novel Stewards of the Flame is available both in trade paperback and as an e-book. (If anyone who receives this message hasn't heard of it before, that's because it's not suitable for YA readers and so I didn't announce it to my teen list.) Stewards won a bronze medal in the 2008 Independent Publishers (IPPY) awards. If you have a copy and would like a foil award seal to put on the cover, just let me know -- copies I ship in the future will have seals; those sold elsewhere will not. Full information about the story, plus a video trailer, review quotes, sample chapters, and a book group discussion guide, can be found at www.stewardsoftheflame.com.

For a limited time I am offering FREE SHIPPING within the U.S., and discounted international shipping, on all of these books to anyone who mentions this message.

And of course, I'm always happy to receive comments on my books from those of you who have already read them.

I hope to hear from you!

These books are also available for Kindle

Stinz classic revised and re-published

PRESS RELEASE: From: A Fine Line Press 360 963 2935 barr@stinz.com

Coming from A Fine Line Press, distributed by Diamond Distribution and Haven Distribution, December 2008.

AN INSUPPORTABLE LIGHT: The Original Stinz Novel, 2008 Revised edition, 406 black and white acid-free pages, 29 illustrations

ISBN: 1892253305 EAN: 998182-253309

Retail $37.95 (Print On Demand)

AN INSUPPORTABLE LIGHT is the original Stinz novel, featuring Donna Barr's half-horse hero back when she thought of him as having two legs instead of four. This is the new 2008 revision.

The story begins at the end of one war, with the hope of peace. Then one small incident after another, building and combining like pebbles tossed down a slope, become an avalanche of misunderstandings, broken hearts, fury and revenge. It's about how wars start: nobody wants them, nobody can see them coming and nobody can stop them.

Donna Barr is offering the revised edition of the original prose novel, AN INSUPPORTABLE LIGHT, that became the source of her classic drawn-book series, STINZ.

It has a completely new cover -- bright red as befits a novel about war – as well as major revisions in and modernizing of the language, and of the beginning.

(Note: The very limited-run first edition of AN INSUPPORTABLE LIGHT, also printed on acid-free paper, is now officially out of print – and highly collectible.)

TYPHON is edited and published by Danny Hellman, who brought readers the acclaimed comics anthologies LEGAL ACTION COMICS Volumes 1 & 2 in 2000 and 2003.

"TYPHON is a departure from my previous projects, " says editor Hellman. "I'd initially set out to do a third volume in the Legal Action series, but as the contributions started coming in, I realized that I was looking at a far more ambitious book than what I'd done previously. The work presented in TYPHON covers a wide spectrum of what's possible in comics, from zany, offbeat humor to unnerving existential angst, and on to chilling horror, all of it brought to life with breathtaking, cutting-edge artwork."

Hellman comments, "as a comics reader, I'm a big fan of the anthology format. I first came across the work of many of my favorite cartoonists in anthologies like ARCADE, WEIRDO, RAW and DRAWN & QUARTERLY. I'm proud to carry on in the tradition of those legendary titles, and I believe that TYPHON will stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the bookshelf next to them."
Hellman adds, "anthologies give us the opportunity to enjoy work by talented cartoonists who, for whatever reason, don't produce enough material to fill out solo books. As an editor of anthologies, I'm excited to provide a showcase for artists and work that we might not see otherwise. Diversity makes for a richer comics scene."

Danny Hellman is an internationally-published illustrator whose drawings have appeared in Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, the Village Voice, and in countless other publications.
